About James Malters
Jim Malters grew up in southwestern Minnesota. He graduated from Fulda High School, graduated with high honors from St. John’s University and from the University of Minnesota Law School. This year marked his 37th year in the practice of law. He is licensed to practice in Minnesota, South Dakota and Iowa. He has been designated a Board Certified Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association and the National Board of Trial Advocacy since 1990. Jim has served on the Board of Governors of both the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Minnesota Association for Justice (MNAJ).
He has taught continuing legal education (CLE) classes for other attorneys and is a co-author of the Minnesota Cause of Action Manual, published by MNAJ and the Minnesota State District Court Practice Handbook, published by Minnesota CLE. He has been a Minnesota Million-Dollar Round Table member since 1993. He has had sixteen recoveries exceeding $1 million, including a $2.6 million verdict for a dram shop action; a $2 million settlement against a health insurance company which refused to provide coverage for a bone marrow transplant; and a $1.9 million recovery for the heirs of a 67-year-old man who died as a result of food-borne hepatitis. Most recently, Jim obtained a $2.30 million recovery in a wrongful death settlement for the heirs of a 67-year-old man who died in an accident involving an over-the-road trucking company.
He and his wife have three daughters and three Labrador Retrievers. His wife prefers that he mentions the girls first. He enjoys training his “boys” and competing in field trials. He also likes to hunt and fish. Jim is a commercial pilot who has handled numerous aviation cases. He has been recognized by Minnesota Law & Politics as a “Super Lawyer” since 2000, receiving the Excellence in Practice(top 5% of Minnesota attorneys) designation in 2015. He has been recognized as one of Minnesota’s Leading Attorneys since 1997. He was recognized as one of the Top 40 Plaintiffs’ Personal Injury Attorneys in Minnesota by the 2009 Who’s Who in Plaintiffs’ Personal Injury Resource Guide to Minnesota Attorneys; as one of the Top Attorneys in Minnesota by Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine in August 2013; and has received the Client Satisfaction Award in 2015 and 2016 from the American Institute of Personal injury Attorneys.
